An individual once presented the Rebbe with the following quandary: he was working in a מוסד קודש and the salary he was receiving was not making ends meet; he, therefore, asked the Rebbe if he could receive a היתר to abstain from giving his monthly maaser payments. The Rebbe responded that abstaining from giving maaser was not an option. On the contrary, the very giving of maaser would improve his financial situation:
במה שכתב אודות נתינת מעשר לצדקה, לפלא קצת השאלה, אחרי שענין הוא בשולחן ערוך ובפרט בתוככי עדת החסידים, ואדרבה באם כלשונו אינם מסתדרים במשכורתם דעד עתה, הרי אז מקום ועצה דעצת חכמינו ז״ל מלח ממון חסר ולא להיפך חס ושלום...

Notwithstanding the Rebbe's above-mentioned objection to abstaining from the giving of maaser, special considerations were taken into account when dealing with individuals who were struggling financially. In the following letter, the Rebbe advises one who is struggling financially to give half the maaser he owes now and have the other half as debt that should be repaid when things get better financially:
שלום וברכה!... במ"ש אודות הפרשת מעשר לצדקה כשמצב הפרנסה דחוק, הנה ינהג שהחצי מן הנ"ל יתן בפועל והחצי יזקוף ע"ע כחוב לקופת הצדקה ולכשירחיב יסלקו…

In a different response to someone struggling financially, the Rebbe advises to give מעשר מן המעשר now and have the rest written down to be paid up when things get better financially.

Making Hashem your business partner.
In the following letter, the Rebbe explains that the way to make Hashem a partner in business is by pledging slightly more than a tenth or, better yet, closer to a fifth of your profits to tzedakah: כן במה ששואל הנ"ל, שאין מזדמן לו קונים על הבית שקנה בשביל פרנסה. הנה יקח את השי"ת לשותף - ע"י שיבטיח לצדקה, מעט יותר ממעשר מהריוח, ומה טוב קרוב לחומש - ומובטח שותף הנ"ל להביא ברכה והצלחה מתאים להפסק עשר בשביל שתתעשר וכאשר יראה השגחה פרטית בזה, הרי כדאי שגם אח"כ יתעסק בקניית בית לפרנסה ע"ד זה נוסף על מה שיתעסק ג"כ במלאכתו

Maaser is the minimum; however, the more (one gives), the merrier (the financial situation will be), as illustrated in the following letter:במענה למכתבו - שנתארך דרך הילוכו יותר על הרגיל עד שהגיע לידי - בו כותב אשר עבר לחנות חדשה, ולעת עתה אינו רואה הצלחה בפרנסתו והוא במקצוע - חייט מסתמא יודע מענין הפרשת מעשר מהריוח, ובפרט כשיש דוחק בפרנסה צריך להרבות בצדקה, אבל בכל אופן לא פחות ממעשר,
The Rebbe adds that when giving maaser, one should make an effort to have it split up to be given on multiple auspicious occasions, i.e., every day before Shachris:
ולחלק את הצדקה בכמה פעמים, ומזמנים המסוגלים הוא בכל יום חול קודם תפלת הבוקר
