In a letter dated 5711, the Rebbe shares that one must use political connections for the embetterment of Yiddishkeit; however, one should avoid affiliation.

This avoidance of affiliation with a political party extends to religious parties as well:

This approach, of using political connections to enhance Yiddishkeit when necessary, was likewise taken by the Frierdiker Rebbe:

Being non-partisan is and has been the longstanding shita of Lubavitch going back to times of old. This includes firm abstinence from any affiliation to anything, even remotely political:

The Rebbe expressed a similar sentiment to Rabbi JJ Hecht in the following story:

In the chofs (1950โ€™s), the Israeli government reached out to various organizations to help them organize donations of extra Sifrei Torah, Tefillin and other Tashmishei Kedusha that were no longer being used in their communities. Rabbi JJ Hecht came through in a big way, sending over 200 SIfrei Torah and 1,000 pairs of Tefillin to be used by the new Olim.


As a thank you, he was invited in ืชืฉื™โ€ื˜,โ€Ž 1959, to a celebration for the new Sifrei Torah as a special guest of the Ministry of Religion.


In a brief diary documenting his activities on his journey, we get a small glimpse of his relentless schedule and demand for his time and counsel. Each day his schedule was packed with meetings with influential people (including Admorim and ministers) and visiting mosdos and speaking to them.


When he went on such trips (he traveled often to EY), the Rebbe often advised him to meet with influential dignitaries and ministers.

The value of staying non-partisan:

โ€ฆThe work of Chabad in every field of Jewish endeavor has always been on a non-sectarian basis and not confined to any particular group, but embraces all our fellow Jews.
It is because of this that it has remained free from outside influences and pressures, and it is because of this that it has succeeded so well, with the help of G-d.
