Why Doesn’t Hashem Make Peace?

Like a parent raising their children

A child asked the Rebbe: Why have there been wars for almost 2,000 years, and Hashem doesn’t make peace?

The Rebbe responded:

"כמו בחינוך בנים שההורים אוהבים אותם באמת - שההורים משתדלים שיהיו עצמאים ושבהבנת עצמם יתנהגו כדבעי וכו' (ולא שיוכרחו לזה ע"י מכות ר"ל ועונש) ושכל אחד מהבנים ישפיע על השאר בזה."

Free Translation:

Just like when a parent is educating their children whom they love dearly - the parent will try their best to be see if the children can be independent and learn on their own how to behave etc (not be forced into it by discipline and punishment). And that each of the children will influence the rest.

What to Do When There is a War At Home

The Rebbe's advice to those experiencing war at home

In Nissan 5742, at the beginning of the Falklands War between Argentina and Britain, Anash, living in Argentina, wrote to the Rebbe.

Here is the Rebbe's reply:

יוסיפו בקיום התוהמ"צ ובטחון בה' שזהו ג"כ א' מהמצות אזכיר עה"צ.

Free Translation:

Add in the observance of Torah, Mitzvot and the trust in Hashem, which is also a Mitzvah. I will mention it at the Tzion.

When Nations Are At War, Think About Moshiach

אמר רבי אלעזר בר אבונא, אם ראית מלכיות מתגרות זו בזו צפה לרגליו של מלך המשיח.

Free Translation:
Rabbi Eliezer Ben Avuna says if you see nations going to war against each other, lookout for the feet of Moshiach.

"הנה אף שענין זה הוא מסימני הגאולה, כלשון חז"ל "אם ראית מלכיות מתגרות זו בזו צפה לרגליו של משיח" - הרי בנוגע לענין הבלתי רצוי שבזה, בודאי יצאו כבר י"ח לכל הדעות [ועד"ז בנוגע לשאר הסימנים בענינים בלתי רצויים], ולא נותר עתה אלא לצפות "לרגליו של משיח", ולכן, צריכים כאו"א לעשות כל התלוי בהם לבטל את המצב הבלתי-רצוי מכל וכל."

Free Translation:

This idea is part of the signs of Geulah, as Chazal says, "If you have seen kings provoking one another, look for the feet of Moshiach". With regard to the undesirable aspects, all opinions agree that we already passed the negative Simonim. All that's left is to expect "the feet of Moshiach." Therefore, each person must do everything in their power to end the undesirable situation entirely.
